A Intel anunciou nesta segunda-feira (17/09) o que classifica como o fotodetector de silício e germânio de melhor perfomance do mundo. O modelador é capaz de transmitir dados a 40 Gbps (Gigabits por segundo). A geração anterior, anunciada em abril de 2005, operava a 10 Gbps. O anúncio foi feito durante uma prévia do Intel Developers Forum, que acontece entre 18 e 20 de setembro, em São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos. De acordo com Mario Peniccia, diretor do laboratório de Tecnologias Fotônicas da Intel, a tecnologia será demonstrada tecnicamente em 20 de setembro, em uma conferência em Tóquio. A fotônica é a ciência cuja finalidade é o controle, manipulação, transferência e armazenamento de informações utilizando luz (fótons). Atualmente, a tecnologia depende de materiais raros e o objetivo das pesquisas da Intel na área é viabilzar o uso de silício como base para os dispositivos fotônicos. Segundo Peniccia, os componentes utilizados hoje são ou muitos eficientes, mas pouco velozes, ou muito rápidos, mas pouco eficientes. Além de mais veloz, o fotodetector anunciado nesta segunda-feira pela Intel oferece 95% de eficiência, de acordo com o executivo. "Estamos claramente caminhando para um cenário em que centenas de núcleos transmitirão dados para dentro e para fora da CPU", apontou o diretor. O uso de tecnologias como a fotônica pode dar maior agilidade a esse processo. A tecnologia deve ser comercializada antes do final da década, segundo Peniccia. The deal is expected to close within five days.
