Significado do "nth" em nth-child?

Vocês sabem qual o significado de "nth" em nth-child?

Me deparei com essa dúvida e não achei nada a respeito ainda, conto com vocês! Abs

Eu creio que seja por que a maioria dos números ordinais em inglês, terminem em nth/th

3 rd third 13 th thirteenth 23 rd twenty-third 50 th fiftieth

6 th sixth 16 th sixteenth 26 th twenty-sixth 80 th eightieth

O nth significa enésimo. Ou seja descendente n-ésimo, que depois é indicado dentro do parêntese.

nth seria um número ordinal, segue um complemento

 

N é um número, N-ésimo seria o mesmo que Nº

Tipo 1º, 2º, 3º ... nº
Primeiro, segundo, terceiro, ..., n-ésimo (se lê: enésimo)
se n=10, se trata do décimo
se N=1000, se está falando do milésimo.
